Keep your Christmas flowers fresh in the winter using expert tips

Christmas flowers are a thoughtful way to brighten any home during the festive season.

But with winter's chill and the central heating on full blast, keeping cut flowers fresh can be a challenge.

Samantha Walker, a floral product developer at M&S, shares her expert advice on how to maintain your blooms and avoid common pitfalls.

Avoid the Fruit Bowl

Ms Walker says: "Some fruits release gases that speed up the ageing process of flowers.

"Apples, bananas, tomatoes, and pears are the worst offenders. Keep your flowers away from the fruit bowl to ensure they last longer."

Use Lukewarm Water

Cold tap water can shock flower stems and cause wilting, especially in winter.

Instead, fill your vase with lukewarm water to help flowers absorb water and open up.

Pick the Perfect Spot

Ms Walker warns against placing flowers near radiators, fireplaces, or south-facing windows with strong sunlight, even in winter.

She said: "Kitchens can also get too warm during holiday cooking, so they might not be the best place for your bouquet."

Trim Stems Properly

Ms Walker advised: "When you receive your bouquet, trim the stems at a 45-degree angle to maximize hydration.

"For woody stems like roses and eucalyptus, make an additional vertical cut of around 5cm to improve water absorption."

Feed Your Flowers

Most bouquets come with flower food, use it!

If you’ve misplaced it, Walker recommends a DIY solution: mix two tablespoons of lemon juice and one tablespoon of sugar in a vase of water.

With these tips, your festive flowers can bring joy throughout the season, even in the toughest winter conditions.
