Brussels sprouts will taste delicious if cooked with the proper recipe

Brussels sprouts are one of the most polarising dishes at the Christmas dinner table, with many people hating them due to their bitter taste.

However, the reason many people despise these round green vegetables is because they are cooking them wrong.

When Brussels sprouts are overcooked they release sulfur compounds, and when boiled they become mushy, which creates a soggy dish with a strong unpleasant taste.

Erren Hart, a cook and founder of Erren’s Kitchen, has shared that Brussels sprouts taste amazing when cooked properly, and it is incredibly simple to do so with her recipe that only requires five ingredients.

She said: “This easy side dish is my family’s favourite vegetable recipe… EVER. And I’m betting that once you try it, it’ll be a favourite in your house too! “

The secret to making Brussels sprouts is to roast them on a high heat in the oven, as it causes the natural sugars in the vegetable to caramelise, which gives them a sweet nutty flavour.

They will also be extremely crispy on the outside while being creamy and soft on the inside, so you can have delicious Brussels sprouts that will win over even the harshest critics of this dish.

Erren said: “Brown is good. If you’ve never cooked Brussels sprouts this way, at first glance, you may think it looks burnt out of the oven, but once you taste it, you’ll know those little “burnt” areas are the best-tasting parts!”

How to properly make roasted Brussels sprouts

You will need:

  • 450g of Brussels sprouts
  • Three cloves of garlic
  • Three tablespoons of olive oil
  • 25g of Parmesan cheese
  • Salt and pepper

Recipe:

To begin, prepare your Brussels sprouts by washing them, removing any loose leaves and trimming the stems by cutting any tough ends.

Halve any large Brussels sprouts so all of them are roughly the same size and cut a cross through any smaller sprouts.

Erren explained: “The stem is the toughest part of the Brussels sprout and the cross allows them to cook at the same rate as the tender area.”

Once you are ready to cook, place some baking paper onto a large baking tray and then add your Brussels sprouts.

Arrange the Brussels sprouts until they are in a single layer and then drizzle the olive oil all over them.

Cut the garlic cloves into thin slices and add them to the baking tray so they are evenly spread.

Grate the Parmesan cheese over the Brussels sprouts as well and then season with salt and pepper.

Roast the Brussels sprouts at 200C for 20 minutes or until they are a golden brown colour.

Once they are fully cooked take out the oven, scatter some fresh parmesan cheese on top and your delicious Brussels sprouts are ready to eat.
