If the shower pressure has not been working properly then you likely have a clogged shower head, and it is incredibly easy to fix in just 10 minutes. 

Many people do not realise that the inside of their shower head needs to be cleaned regularly as it can become filled with limescale, a hard chalky build-up made up of minerals from evaporated water. 

Limescale is harmless and can be found near any water source in the home such as toilets, sinks and even kettles, but it is a stubborn stain that can be difficult to clean away. 

However, Francesca, a cleaning expert and founder of Thoroughly Modern Grandma has shared there is a simple cleaning method to get rid of limescale using only one natural product. 

Francesca said: “Citric acid makes a great alternative to using vinegar in a general cleaning spray, especially if you’re not keen on the smell of vinegar."

She added: “Have you ever noticed how the holes in your shower head get clogged up?

“These can easily be cleaned by soaking your shower head in a solution of hot water and citric acid. Leave for around 10 minutes and then rinse.”

Citric acid is a natural acid found in lemon juice as well as other citrus fruits like limes and oranges. 

It is extremely popular to use for cleaning due to its antibacterial properties and is great for anyone who does not want to use chemical cleaning agents around their home.

Citric acid works well against limescale as it can naturally break down minerals inside the buildup such as calcium carbonate and lime. 

It will dissolve these minerals without damaging the metal of plastic components on the shower head so you will have a clean shower in no time. 

A crystallised version of citric acid can be bought in most supermarkets and home improvement stores, as at ASDA it only costs £1.75 while at B&Q it costs £2.25.

How to use citric acid to clean your shower head

All you have to do is mix two tablespoons of citric acid with warm water in a container. Then stir the solution until the citric acid has fully dissolved. 

Next, unscrew the show head and it should be easy to remove by hand. 

Submerge the shower head in the citric acid solution and leave it for 10 minutes. If there is a heavy buildup, consider leaving it for 30 minutes or even up to an hour. 

Once the time is up, use an old toothbrush or soft brush to wipe the showerhead to fully get rid of any loosened limescale. 

Rinse the showerhead with clean warm water to get rid of any remaining debris. 

Reattach the showerhead, tighten it securely, and the limescale should have completely dissolved without having to scrub it for ages. 

If you are struggling to remove the showerhead from the shower, simply place the citric acid solution in a plastic bag and attach it to the showerhead with an elastic band.
