Gardening expert explains how to keep your poinsettia alive this Chrismas

Poinsettias, known for their striking red and green foliage, have become a cherished symbol of the festive season.

However, many struggle to keep these iconic holiday plants alive beyond Christmas.

Gardening expert Michael Griffiths has revealed simple steps to help your poinsettia thrive through the holidays and into the new year.

Michael advises starting at the source.

When selecting a poinsettia, ensure the plant has dark green foliage that extends down to the soil.

Avoid poinsettias near draughty entrances or petrol station forecourts, as exposure to cold air can shorten their lifespan.

Once purchased, protect your poinsettia during transport by covering it and avoiding exposure to freezing temperatures.

To ensure longevity, place your poinsettia in a bright, draught-free area, away from direct sunlight, windows, fireplaces, and doorways where temperature fluctuations can harm the plant.

They thrive in steady temperatures between 13C and 15C.

Michael added: "Only water when the top of the compost feels dry, and never let the roots sit in excess water."

High humidity also helps mist the leaves to create a more suitable environment.

Feed your poinsettia with a high-potassium fertiliser, like tomato feed, for continued blooming. Michael also suggests a trick to encourage flowering.

"Place the plant in a dark room for 12 hours a day, shielding it from artificial light."

One common error is leaving poinsettias in a car overnight, which can damage their delicate leaves.

Another is overwatering or positioning them in fluctuating temperatures, which can lead to wilting.
