Luke Humphries puts interviewer in his place with brutal putdown | Other | Sport

Luke Humphries showed his ruthless side in an interview after issuing a brutal putdown to any amateurs dreaming of becoming darts world champion.

It's a topic the Newbury star is well-versed in as he heads into the Worlds Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace with the status of reigning champion.

Humphries has spent over a decade in the game since turning professional in 2010, winning 18 senior titles on the PDC Tour and winning his first TV title in 2023 at the World Grand Prix.

But he doesn't believe that practice makes perfect for true champions in the world of darts, lifting the lid on how he spends three or four days a week honing his craft.

Humphries answered quick-fire questions from an interviewer, who was described as only a 'darts novice', as the world No 1 was quizzed on his career in a tongue-in-cheek interview.

When the interviewer asked if he could become world champion with 10 hours of practice a day for the next 10 years, the 29-year-old told Paddy Power: "Probably not. I just think you have to have some sense of ability in you."

He was challenged on whether he felt he had any ability. Humphries responded with a smile: "No, I think you've got none, to be honest. Sorry about that."

"None? Based on just looking at me?" the interviewer asked. Humphries added: "I can just look at you and go 'That man's got no luck in life, has he?'

"I think you'd probably be good but it's hard to be world number one and world champ. You need an element of something in you, I feel."

"And I've not got that?" the interviewer asks, to which the darts expert issued a savage response: "Sorry, but no."

As the top-ranked player in the PDC Order of Merit, Humphries has been able to add a number of pieces of silverware to his trophy collection, which he keeps at home on a shelf purchased from Ikea.

"I keep it on a mantelpiece that I got from Ikea. It's getting a bit weak now as it's got quite a few trophies on it," he said. "It's in the kitchen and it's a nice thing for people to see."

Humphries also said he had to get extra insurance on his house to cover the trophies, which are worth 'between £20,000 and £30,000'.

After beating Littler in last year's World Darts Championship final to secure the title, a series of stars from across the globe got in touch with Humphries to offer their congratulations.

One of them, surprisingly, was NFL star Mecole Hardman, who plays as a wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs.

"I met him last year in New York, we just kept chatting really," Humphries said. "I think Ian Poutler did [too], and I love golf, so that was a good one to get."
