Huge EE shake-up could make your next mobile bill a lot more expensive

EE customers who use their phones abroad are about to be hit by some big changes to their mobile phone bills. The UK network has confirmed that it's shaking up its roaming plans with new ways to pay along with updates to its existing offers. For those not aware, EE charges new and existing users who change their current plan a £2.47 per day fee for using data and making calls when in Europe.

That price isn't currently changing (those on legacy plans also still get free Eu roaming) but things do switch up if you start travelling further afield. When heading to areas such as the US, South Africa and Australia EE used to charge a flat fee of £25 for the whole month.

That's about to change with the network now offering a day rate of £5 or a weekly charge of £25.

For those heading to New York for a quick two-day shopping trip this will be better value as they'll pay just £10 to stay connected. However, head to Florida for a two-week break and you'll now pay £50 rather than the previous fee of £25.

EE has also split the world into different zones with prices varying depending on where you go.

For example, Zone 2 - which includes India and Egypt - costs £7.50 per day or £37.50 for a week. Then there's Zone 3 - includes Brazil and Japan - which costs £7.50 per day with no 7-day charge available. Head to Zone 4 - which includes Nepal and the Maldives - and you'll pay a whopping £15 per day - again there is no weekly fee.

"EE has refreshed its international roaming offering providing a more simplified proposition to improve customer experience and give better value to customers who use their EE mobile abroad," the network said in an email.

"Customers who are going away ahead of the festive season or heading off for some winter sun, will be able to use the new roaming products that gives them the flexibility to purchase daily or weekly passes to use their phone as they would at home."

EE says that customers will be warned of the add-ons when they land and can sign up or switch off roaming if they don't want to face paying a fee. You can also use this EE calculator to see how much a trip abroad is about to cost you.
