Labour is haemorrhaging council seats in by-elections, according to new stats, in a sign of voter fury at the five-month-old Government.

Despite sweeping to power with a landslide in July, voters have already turned on Sir Keir Starmer.

According to Election Maps UK analysis, Labour has lost around a quarter of its council seats up for by-elections since the 2024 general election.

Of the 166 council seat by-elections since July, Labour has lost 24 of its 86 seats.

The Tories are the main benefactors, putting adding 23 to their total.

Reform has also done well, winning five new council seats after standing in just 30 by-elections.

According to number crunchers last month, Labour is currently shedding around 40% of all its council seat defences when voters are given the chance to have their say.

The sign may point to trouble for Labour at next year’s local elections, which party strategists were hoping to capitalise on after the Tories’ crushing general election defeat.

Since Labour won the election, with 34% of the vote, Sir Keir’s party has now plummeted in the polls.

Labour is tied with the Tories on 26%, up two points since the election.

However it’s Reform who have benefited the most, rising sharply from 14% in July to 21% today.

Some polls even suggest Nigel Farage’s party has overtaken Labour to become the second most popular.

The PM’s personal approval ratings have also plummeted, going from a net approval of +28 immediately after moving into No.10 to -32 points today.
