The late Queen Elizabeth II wore a crown when bathing King Charles and Princess Anne as children, her eldest child revealed in a new documentary.

King Charles previously recalled how his late mother, who died aged 96 in 2022, wore a crown whilst doing mundane tasks in preparation for her coronation ceremony in June 1953.

The 76-year-old recalled this bizarre memory when he surprised 12 of the coronation girls at Buckingham Palace last year.

Speaking about the practicalities of wearing a crown, the King told them: "I remember it all so well then, because I remember my sister and I had bath time in the evening.

'My mama used to come up at bath time wearing the crown to practice. You have to get used to how heavy it is. I've never forgotten, I can still remember it vividly."

"It is very important to wear it for a certain amount of time, because you get used to it then. But the big one that you're crowned with, the St Edward's Crown, it weighs five pounds."

He added: "It is much heavier and taller, so there's always that feeling of feeling slightly anxious, in case it wobbles. You have to carry it, you have to look straight ahead."

The King, who ascended the throne in September 2022, revealed his nerves surrounding his own coronation last year in a new documentary.

The FeltFilm documentary, titled Coronation Girls, follows the story of 50 young women from across Canada who were sponsored by a Canadian businessman to attend the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Fast forward to 2023, 12 of those women met King Charles as they came to London to retrace their iconic steps.
