Gen Z missing out on films and TV shows that defined different generations | Films | Entertainment

A new poll has revealed that 26% of Gen Z are missing out on classic films like Citizen Kane, Casino, and Vertigo, simply because they can't find the time.

Many also admitted they haven’t seen all-time greats such as Apocalypse Now and Airplane!. In fact, twice as many Baby Boomers (79%) have seen the 1980 American disaster comedy starring Leslie Nielsen compared to Gen Z.

Similarly, Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Sound of Music also show a generational divide, with 27% and 24% of young adults respectively not having seen these films, compared to only 11% and 10% of Gen-X and Boomers.

Interestingly, Gen Z and those over 80 are less concerned about owning a TV, with 71% of their media consumption happening on smartphones.

A spokesperson from Lenovo, which conducted the study to promote its Tab Plus, commented: "Young people are consuming media in such a different way. They are far less likely to watch on a TV and a classic blockbuster just isn't the same on a smartphone screen."

Furthermore, only 24% of Gen Z could identify the chilling line "I see dead people" from the 1999 horror masterpiece The Sixth Sense. Only 32% knew the origins of "I'll have what she's having", while a mere 33% recognised the iconic line, "Say hello to my little friend."

The survey also revealed that Gen Z now prefers music over TV for relaxation, but 24% only listen to individual songs rather than full albums.

Iconic albums such as The Velvet Underground and Nico (36%), Led Zeppelin IV (35%) and Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon (24%) are sadly not hitting the mark with modern youth who prefer individual tracks over complete records.

Only a mere 20% of post-1996 births find solace in the pages of a book, a whopping 54% of the Boomer generation see it as their go-to relaxation technique.

On the flip side, when today's young adults seek to unwind, they're more inclined to flick on YouTube (26%) or immerse themselves in video games (26%).

Results from a OnePoll survey indicate a staggering 93% of Gen Z deem tech and gadgets pivotal for relaxation – using them for entertainment, soothing tunes, and touching base with loved ones while 43% of Boomers beg to differ, not considering technology integral to kicking back.

Lenovo's spokesperson remarked: "Technology is a huge part of our lives now and has an impact in almost everything we do."

They added, "From entertainment, to work, to communication, modern tech has made life different in nearly every way imaginable."
