The Met Office has given its verdict on when the UK will see its next dumping of snow and it could be in just a matter of days.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert predicts that next Tuesday (December 4) "will start with a widespread frost and potentially patchy fog in places" and as we go into Wednesday northern England Scotland may catch a glimpse of snow.

"Rain will spread east later in the day or overnight into Wednesday, December 5, with some snow likely in places initially, mainly over high ground in Scotland and northern England," said Lehnert.

Lehnert added: "Much of next week looks likely to remain unsettled, especially for northern and western parts of the UK. However, there are some signals on the horizon that the weather for the following week could once again become more settled."

This comes after the Met Office issued an array of weather warnings last week as Storm Bert arrived in Britain, prompting a slew of yellow and amber weather alerts.

The "multi hazard event" brought major disruption across the UK with key train lines grinding to a halt and people's homes left flooded.

Weather maps for Tuesday, December 3 show the North of England and Scotland covered by a blanket of snow in the latest big freeze to hit the UK.

The North of England may be hit with snow which could reach up to 3cm per hour while snowfall in Scotland could reach as high as 10cm per hour with Newcastle in England also seeing the same level.

On Tuesday morning at around 6am, temperatures could plunge to as low as -5C in central Scotland, and just a couple of degrees higher in surrounding areas.

As we go in Wednesday weather, maps once again show that Scotland and the North of England will once again be hit by a dumping of snow.

In the Scottish Highlands, between 5cm-10cm of snow is expected with temperatures peaking at a mere five degrees while Newcastle will see temperatures struggling to go above one degrees.

The start of the Met Office's weather forecast for December 3-12 states: "A cold and frosty start is expected on Tuesday, with some patchy freezing fog in places, which may be slow to clear.

"Cloud will increase from the west, then later rain for western parts. This may fall as snow at first across Scotland and the Highlands."
