Police have released a facial reconstruction of a woman who was found in a river in Manchester eight months ago but whose identity remains a mystery.

The body of the woman, wearing a neon-green Primark crop-top and New Look jeans, was found by a member of the public in the River Mersey at Chorlton Water Park on 21 March.

Greater Manchester police (GMP) said that despite forensic and DNA examinations and searching databases of missing people, they still had no idea of who the woman was.

A facial reconstruction, created by Face Lab at Liverpool John Moores University, was released on Friday in the hope someone might recognise her.

It is known that the woman was from a European background, about 5ft 1in tall, with a slim build, and dark brown hair. She was likely aged between 26 and 40, though could be older or younger.

She was wearing dark green anti-slip socks, the type used in hospitals and care facilities. She also had an elastic band and hair bobble on her wrist.

Police believe the woman’s body may have been in the river for one or two months. She may have entered the water in a surrounding area or region, with the rivers Tame and Goyt both merging into the Mersey.

The cause of death is being treated as unexplained.

Det Insp Louise Edwards, from GMP’s major incident team, appealed for anyone who recognised the woman, or had information, to contact police.

“We want nothing more than to reunite her with her family and friends,” she said. “She could be someone’s mother, auntie, sister, or cousin – somebody out there will know who she is and we want to ensure she gets back to her loved ones.

“If you have any information at all, please do get in touch with us. Even the smallest amount of information could greatly benefit in finding out who she is, and the circumstances which led to her sadly being discovered in the river more than eight months ago.”
