Triple tragedy on Canary Islands after spate of horror drownings | World | News

The Canary Islands faced a triple tragedy over the weekend as three people died in drowning incidents at beaches on three separate islands.

The Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) confirmed deaths off the coasts of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Tenerife.

Even more shockingly, the Fuerteventura and Tenerife incidents happened within just 10 minutes of each other.

The first death occurred at Playa del Cura in Gran Canaria. On Saturday morning, just before 9am, emergency services received a call alerting them of a person experiencing cardiac arrest after being pulled from the water.

An attempt to resuscitate the patient was made by both a nurse coodinator from the Canary Islands Emergency Medical Service (SUC) and a lifeguard who used an automated external defibrillator (AED).

SUC personnel continued to carry out CPR after arriving by ambulance and helicopter, but unfortunately their efforts could not save the patient and they were pronounced dead at the scene.

In Fuerteventura on the same day, a man had to be pulled out of the sea at Costa Calma before going into cardiac arrest.

Lifeguards attempted to resusciate him before emergency services arrived, but their CPR efforts could not revive him and he died at the beach.

Just 10 minutes later in Tenerife, emergency services receieved a call regarding someone who needed to be rescued from the sea at Playa del Cabezo in El Médano.

A kitesurfer has to be pulled out of the water and was also found experiencing cardiac arrest, prompting a coordinatred response from Maritime Rescue, Local Police, and the Guardia Civil.

SUC personnel and a doctor from San Isidro Health Centre attempted to resuscitate him, but unfortunately he was pronounced dead the scene.

The victim's body currently remains under official custody pending further procedures, including an autopsy.
