Banish condensation with quick step that removes moisture

Managing Director and Interiors Expert at Shutterly Fabulous, Sam Tamlyn spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about banishing condensation and mould.

While leaving condensation on the windows "might seem harmless at first", said Mr Tamlyn, it "creates the perfect environment for mould and mildew".

Mould and mildew can spread along the window frames and onto nearby curtains and walls, which eventually impacts air quality. "Opening the window to remove condensation on a cold winter's morning isn't always ideal," Mr Tamlyn said.

"But there are ways to keep moisture at bay without sacrificing warmth or security." He explained: "Dehumidifiers work wonders for balancing indoor humidity levels. You can also use moisture absorbers like silica gel or desiccant containers."

Dehumidifiers are available to buy from the likes of Argos, Dunelm, B&Q and Asda.

Meanwhile, silica gels – typically found in shipped products as a drying agent – can be bought at Temu, Screwfix, and Dunelm.

While desiccant containers can be bought on Amazon, more attractive ones can be seen in there likes of Robert Dyas and Lakeland.

Mr Tamlyn also pointed out that "strategically placing houseplants, such as peace lilies naturally help regulate moisture".

Even running the extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens can be useful in reducing moisture levels in the home that increase the risk of condensation.

"Running the bathroom extractor fan for 20-30 minutes during and after a shower will really help to prevent moisture buildup," said Mr Tamlyn.

"Insulating your home properly and ensuring heating is evenly distributed can also make a big difference."

As for the quick step that removes moisture without opening the window, all you need to do is get into the habit of wiping down the windows in the morning.

"Wipe down windows and any damp surfaces regularly to avoid build-up," said Mr Tamlyn. "Small steps and good habits go a long way in protecting your home from mould growth."
