Prevent mould growing on furniture with 1 simple tip

According to sleep experts at Winstons, factors such as reduced ventilation and sweat can cause mould to grow on the mattress.

Mould is more likely to develop on the bed mattress during the winter months, especially when condensation builds up in the home.

Condensation occurs when warm, moist air comes into contact with cold surfaces, such as windows, walls or mirrors. This can lead to water droplets that add humidity to the air, which mould thrives off of.

While you are out during the day, mould is given the time to grow larger in areas such as windowsills, walls and on the furniture.

A spokesperson for Winstons – who are the experts on mattresses – said: "Mould only grows in environments with humidity, warmth, and dust.

"We recommend rotating your mattress about once a month to promote good airflow, which can help prevent mould."

Other tips to help prevent mould from growing on household furniture, such as the mattress, includes drying wet clothes away from furniture, such as the bed. "And be sure to open a window to ventilate the room," the experts added.

How to treat mattress mould

1. Vacuum

Vacuum both sides of the mattress thoroughly to loosen and remove dirt and mould. Make sure to empty the vacuum afterwards to avoid more mould spreading.

2. Mix cleaning solution

Mix equal parts warm water and rubbing alcohol, lightly dab a clean cloth into the solution then onto the affected area in a circular motion. Be sure not to soak the cloth as this may make the situation worse by adding more moisture to the area.

3. Let solution sit

Allow the solution to soak into the mattress and then continue to scrub all the visible mould. Scrub over the edges to kill any invisible spores that may be there then allow the mattress to dry.

4. Spray disinfectant

After the mattress has been dried and aired out, spray it with an upholstery disinfectant as an extra precaution.

5. Allow to dry

Ideally allow the mattress to dry in direct sunlight, as this will help the mattress to dry quickly and prevent additional mould growth. Finish by vacuuming to remove any remaining debris.
