Monty Don's 'genius' method to get rid of algae from patio

As autumn’s damp, cool days set in, a common problem emerges in gardens across the UK, slippery, algae-covered paths and patios.

Gardening expert and TV presenter Monty Don recently shared his “genius” tip for tackling this issue quickly and safely on his blog, highlighting the importance of maintaining outdoor surfaces as the weather turns wetter.

Monty explained that algae and moss can grow rapidly on patios, paths, walls, and fences in autumn and early winter, especially on irregular surfaces where moisture lingers.

When left untreated, this growth not only looks unsightly but can also become dangerous.

"At this time of year brick and stone paths can be very slippery and dangerous," he added.

To combat this hazard, Monty recommends using a pressure washer, calling it “the best way” to remove algae from outdoor surfaces.

The high-pressure water quickly clears away the algae, leaving patios and paths cleaner and less slippery.

However, he cautions gardeners to check for and repair any damaged grout between patio stones before starting, as the force of a pressure washer can dislodge loose grout.

Monty suggests using sand to fill in any gaps, ensuring the area remains stable after cleaning.

Monty’s no-chemical, pressure-washing method is not only effective but also eco-friendly, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can harm plants or soil.

By taking a little extra care to clean pathways in November, he notes, gardeners can help keep their outdoor spaces safe and pleasant throughout the colder months.

Beyond tackling algae, Monty recommends a variety of other gardening tasks in November, particularly for patios and paving.

With a bit of focused maintenance, he says, these areas can remain safe, clean, and ready to enjoy as the winter season approaches.
