Roy Keane accuses Man Utd of making Ruben Amorim mistake already after Chelsea draw | Football | Sport

Roy Keane has said Ruben Amorim "should have signed a longer contract" if he wants to sort out all the problems at Manchester United. The former United captain was scathing after his old club turned in an uninspired display against Chelsea, despite managing to come away with a 1-1 draw.

A Bruno Fernandes penalty looked set to give United an unlikely three points, but a volley from Moises Caicedo levelled matters before the Blues pressed hard to no avail late on.

Asked on Sky Sports after the game what Amorim would be thinking had he been watching, former skipper Keane pulled no punches.

"That he should have signed a longer contract," he replied. "There's a long way back for thisn team. I know a new manager will come in, and you hope he will get more out of this group, but this is an average United team.

"The stats back it up. And we keep repeating ourselves, we come along and watch Manchester United today and you don't know what you're going to get with them. It's hit and miss. It's not good."

Keane also accused some United players of "thinking they are better than what they are" and also spoke about the atmosphere at Old Trafford. The crowd was notably muted, with little in the way of chances at either end before Fernandes struck from the spot in the 70th minute.

"Crowd was flat, they must be disappointed," he continued. "United fans must be going away from this scratching their heads today, in fact I thought the crowd were very quiet. We said before the game there might be a reaction to the manager leaving and Ruud being on the sidelines, but there wasn't.

"They were just sitting there hoping something might happen. But not necessarily believing something might happen. I was just glad the referee blew the final whistle, I wasn't excited by it."

Keane's co-pundits appeared to agree, with Frank Lampard saying the game "underwhelmed". Jamie Redknapp meanwhile, said the clash resembled a "pub game" at times.

"When you think these are Premier League players, the top of the top, and they didnt show that," he said. "They only thing I will say from United's point of view is they've been worse, I've seen them play worse this season."

The result compounded United's worst ever league position after 10 games of a Premier League season. It also extended the fixture's record of being the most drawn ever in the top flight since the 1992/93 campaign.
