How to make lawns greener and thicker with one easy gardening task

Lawns still need loving and care through the month of November as the weather is still relatively warm enough to grow.

Although many gardeners may decide to wait until winter is over to amend their lawns, they’ll have a much easier time sorting out their turf now.

From mowing the grass to maintaining the health of your mower, gardening expert Matt D of GardenLawncareGuy has shared what needs doing now to get the healthiest lawn once spring arrives.

He said: “The thickness of your lawn is mostly a measure of how healthy it is, so by getting the basics right almost anyone can achieve a lovely green lawn with some easy-to-follow routines.”

Mowing

Many people struggle with knowing when the last time is they cut their lawn. Matt said that it’s “simple” to tell - and that’s if grass is still growing.

Take care in wet and frosty conditions to stay off the grass, but surprisingly, on a good winter day, you can give the lawn a quick trim.

When mowing at this time of year it’s worth adjusting your mower height one setting higher than your normal cut and definitely not too short as this avoids scalping lawns.

After cutting the grass, make sure to avoid leaving clippings behind as they’ll stop your lawn from surviving the winter months.

Feeding

Your lawn is like any other plant. If you provide it with nutrients, “it will grow greener, thicker, and stronger”.

Matt said, “We prefer granular lawn feed that contains phased-release granules that release over a long period of time.

“Feed the lawn before the lawn frosts to ensure it stays healthy over winter and ready for the new year.”

Maintenance

Winter is a great time to look after your equipment and think about storage.

For petrol mowers and tools, this is normally a service to change plugs, oil and filters and the blade.

For the electric mowers, make sure you charge up your batteries and don't let them run flat over winter as this can “damage the battery and make it difficult to start in the new year”.
