How to remove limescale from kettles fast without vinegar

Limescale not only makes your teas and coffee taste off, but it can also prolong the length it takes to boil water leading to increased energy bills.

Limescale is essentially dissolved minerals from tap water that, when heated, can form into a stubborn deposit that's a right pain to shift, no matter how much elbow grease you put in.

But fear not, cleaning enthusiast and home hacks lover, Sammy Fisher, has shared that you can easily and naturally banish limescale from your kettle using everyday items from your kitchen cupboard - and there’s one that stands out.

Taking to her TikTok account @sammy_lifestlemama, she shared her go-to household kettle descaling method that’s not vinegar.

While vinegar can do a cracking job of cleaning a kettle, Sammy wrote in the comments that she “can’t stand the smell”.

Instead, the natural item she uses is “odourless” and a “miracle worker”, which is citric acid.

She captioned the video: “Limescale removal from my kettle was the quests and most effective cleaning hack I’ve tried so far.”

Sammy opened the clip saying “This limescale hack blew my mind” before showing incredible before and after results.

For this method, start by filling the limescale-infested kettle halfway with water before adding a tablespoon of citric acid.

Next, put the kettle on to boil, unplug and leave the citric acid to sit before emptying out the water and rinsing it out.

If necessary, use a sponge to give the kettle a light scrub to remove any bits of limescale that have been left behind.

Other TikTok users were also raving about citric acid to decade kettles. @user1760251632618 wrote: “I found that citric acid was the best result for cleaning the kettle.”

@bakes_and_home commented: “I’ve used citric acid for years and it always does the job on my kettle. I’m taking some into work to do the staff room kettle tomorrow.”

@bella98 said: “I have been using citric acid for years. Amazing.” Sammy replied: “The citric acid was a miracle worker on the kettle.”

Later on in the comments, she added: “My kettle was so bad and honestly it worked so well first time.”

Some users recommended store-bought kettle descaling products, but Sammy wasn’t a fan. She said: “I tried one before but my kettle was pretty bad and it didn’t even touch the sides. This was instant. I was so surprised. Nearly threw my kettle out as well.”
