One person has died after an explosion ripped through a house in Bedford. The fireball engulfed a property in Cleat Hill, Bedford, at around 7.30am on October 19.

Nearby homes were evacuated, roads were closed and all day people have been told to avoid the area while Bedfordshire Police investigates. Another person remains in hospital after sustaining serious injuries.

A statement released from the police says: "Bedford Borough Council has set up an Emergency Assistance Centre for people who have been evacuated. Enquiries are ongoing to identify the cause of the explosion and residents still in their homes should keep their windows open."

It's reported one resident felt a shudder, while others heard a loud bang before the blaze took hold.

Beds Police added: "We understand this incident is very concerning for those who live in the vicinity and are still advising for people to avoid the Cleat Hill area whilst work at the scene continues.

"Anyone needing extra emotional support can call the Samaritans helpline on 116 123."

Bedford Borough Council said on X: "We have an emergency road closure between Cleat Hill and Kimbolton Road in Bedford. We ask all residents to please avoid the area.

"We have set up an Emergency Assistance Centre for people who have been evacuated. Officers are available at the Emergency Assistance Centre to give advice and arrange support for those who need it."
