The latest weather maps show Britain “barely visible” as a 650-mile storm wreaks havoc across the country.

WXCharts predicts storms will hit the UK next week, from September 24 to 26, bringing with it heavy rains and low temperatures.

The rain stretches from the north of Scotland to the south of England, covering everywhere but Orkney, Lossiemouth and Fraserburgh in Scotland and Derry and Omagh in Northern Ireland.

On Tuesday, it will be heaviest in the west of the country. The worst hit will be north Wales, with Anglesey seeing the most rain.

The areas which will see the most accumulative rain from September 24 to 26 are south Wales, south Cornwall, and western parts of Scotland.

Temperatures will be mild, with lows between 8C and 14C. It will be warmest in the southeast (Plymouth - 14C) with the south coast at 13C.

The midlands and Wales will sit between 11C and 13C. The north of England, the south of Scotland and Northern Ireland will be from 9C to 12C. North Scotland will sit between 8C and 10C.

The Met Office says of this period: “Showers or longer spells of rain will affect parts of England and Wales, especially in the south and southwest but tending to ease away to the southeast early next week.

“Elsewhere, generally settled conditions are prevailing, albeit with low clouds and drizzle along North Sea coasts in particular. Away from here, most places will experience above-average temperatures during this period.”

Tonight:

The northern regions will experience cloudy conditions with occasional drizzle, while the rest of the country will remain clear and dry. In the early hours, clouds will begin to move into eastern areas. Fog is expected to develop in parts.

Wednesday:

In the north, the fog will swiftly clear throughout the morning. The clouds in the east and south are expected to dissipate, resulting in a bright day filled with abundant sunny intervals. It will feel quite warm.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Overall, much of the week is expected to be pleasant, although the development of an easterly breeze may bring some occasional cloud cover. There is a chance of showers by Friday in central and southern regions. It will feel warm in the sunny conditions.
