Luke Littler 'fears the worst' as he sets up awkward Raymond van Barneveld test | Other | SportLuke Littler has admitted that he is ‘fearing the worst’ ahead of his World Series Finals clash with Raymond van Barneveld. The 17-year-old secured a 6-5 win over Ross Smith on Friday night to set up the thrilling tie, and there already appears to be more on the line than just a spot in the third round. Littler has often referred to Van Barneveld as his idol and progressed past the former world champion during his fairytale run to the final of the World Championship last year. However, their relationship appears to have since soured due to Littler allegedly ignoring text messages from his rival. Van Barneveld has spoken openly about how he is unhappy with how his congratulatory texts were allegedly ignored, especially as Littler has talked up his admiration of the 57-year-old, and the Dutchman will be keen to claim some bragging rights over him on home soil. Littler is certainly aware of the size of the challenge that awaits him though. Speaking after his win over Smith in Amsterdam, he said: “Tonight was pretty wild and that was two Englishmen against each other. “But I am ready and fear the worst. If anything is better then I’ll take it. Me and Raymond will both be confident, I know I am. “The World Championship was a crazy experience and beating one of my old idols in Raymond. But Saturday night will be different, he’ll have the crowd on his side. Worst case is I’ll have to switch on the gears like I did tonight. I’ll have to make a good start and get right into it.” Van Barneveld blasted Littler earlier this year after his text messages were allegedly left on read by the teenager, despite seeking face-to-face clarification on the best way to contact the breakthrough star. He explained: “I understood then that I am his example. That at the World Championship you don't chat I can understand, but other tournaments... The other day I walked up to him to shake his hand.' Then he took out his earplug for a moment and only said the most necessary thing.” Van Barneveld then revealed that he asked Littler about why his WhatsApp messages were being ignored, continuing: “To that he responded: "Yes, I only respond to text messages. WhatsApp I'm actually not on." Well fine, I sent a text message. And then nothing. Fine. Then I'm also a bit done with it. The next time I get asked if I want to do something for him, I'll pass.” Source link Posted: 2024-09-14 10:11:56 |
