Olympic marathon runner's ex-boyfriend dies after 'killing her by setting her on fire' | Other | Sport

The former partner of Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei has died in hospital after allegedly setting her on fire, but injuring himself in the process. Last week, it was confirmed that Cheptegei had died four days after sustaining burns to 80 per cent of her body.

The Ugandan athlete was allegedly attacked following her return to Kenya, where she lived, after competing at the Olympic Games. Dickson Ndiema, her former boyfriend, was alleged to have poured a can of petrol over her before setting her alight.

Ndiema also sustained burns across much of his body and died in hospital on Monday, according to Nation Africa. They both spent several days in intensive care at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in western Kenya.

It was reported that Cheptegei and Ndiema had been arguing over the land that Cheptegei's house was built upon. Ndiema was said to have let himself into Cheptegei's home while she was attending church with her two children.

When she returned, Ndiema allegedly set her on fire during an argument before she was rushed to hospital with severe burns on most of her body. Local police said the couple were embroiled in a heated disagreement before the shocking incident took place.

Police commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom said: "The couple was heard quarrelling outside their house. During the altercation, the boyfriend was seen pouring a liquid on the woman before burning her. The suspect was also caught by the fire and sustained serious burns."

Cheptegei later died after suffering multiple organ failure as a result of her burns. Her death was confirmed by the Ugandan Athletics Federation, who said: "We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence.

"As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace."

Lord Coe, president of World Athletics, added: "Our sport has lost a talented athlete in the most tragic and unthinkable circumstances. Rebecca was an incredibly versatile runner who still had lots left to give on the roads, mountains and cross country trails."

Cheptegei remains the Ugandan record holder for the women's marathon and was a former world champion in mountain running. She represented her country at several world championships in multiple disciplines and finished in 44th place in the women's marathon at the Olympics.
