How to keep cake fresh: Never put it in fridge and use method to store it for longer

As we approach September, the most popular birthday month of the year, many are preparing for a surplus of birthday cake, meaning they’ll need a good way to keep their cake leftovers fresh.

Vlatka lake, storage expert at self-storage operator Space Station, told Express.co.uk how to help maintain its flavour and texture for as long as possible.

And perhaps most importantly, the expert shared why cake should not be kept in the fridge.

She said: “There are a few different ways to effectively store cake, and it typically depends on the type of cake and ingredients.

“In most cases, the general rule applies in which your cake should be kept at room temperature and in a cake tin for short-term storage, avoiding plastic containers when possible.

“If your cake is coated in a layer of buttercream then you should ensure that the container you select is airtight so you can protect the best flavours. This method should keep your cake moist and flavourful for up to a week.”

Another note the expert made is to avoid storing cakes and biscuits in the same container, as the moisture from the cake can cause biscuits to become soggy.

Interestingly, the fridge is not the ideal place for cake storage. Refrigerating cakes can cause them to stale faster than if kept at room temperature.

The exception is cakes with perishable ingredients like fresh fruit or custard, which should be refrigerated. Be sure to cover these cakes with cling film, foil, or place them in a box to prevent them from drying out.

For longer-term storage, and we’re talking really long term, freezing is the best option, according to Lake.

To keep your cake fresh for an extended period, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or tin foil, or place it in a freezer-safe container before storing it in the freezer.

When you're ready to enjoy a slice, allow the cake to thaw at room temperature, and ensure you have space on your countertop for it to defrost properly.

"Freezing can keep your cake fresh and safe to eat for up to 6 months, depending on the ingredients," added Lake.
