RIP Windows 10: Update offers game-changing news for popular software

It's no secret that Microsoft wants everyone to migrate to Windows 11 with the firm scrapping free support for Windows 10 from October 2025. With that deadline looming large it appears users are finally giving in and making the jump to the latest operating system. Just last month, Express.co.uk confirmed (via Stat Counter) that Windows 11 user numbers are increasing whilst Windows 10 is in decline.

Now there's another update which proves Windows 11 could finally be winning. New figures from the team at Steam show, for the first time, Windows 11 is now the most popular platform for playing games.

In fact, over the past month it's grown by almost 4 percent and now commands a 49.17 percent advantage over other operating systems including Windows 10 (now 47.09%).

It's another big milestone that could finally prove we are seeing the end of Windows 10.

With 13 months to go until support ends, Microsoft remains calm about the large number of people still using Windows 10 with the Redmond firm confident users will make the switch soon.

"It doesn't surprise me," said Aaron Woodman, Vice President, Windows Marketing at Microsoft, when recently quizzed by Express.co.uk about Windows 10 user numbers.

"We had a bunch of customers on Windows 7 even after we launched Windows 10, until the end of support date for Windows 7. We're actually ahead of the Windows 7 to Windows 10 transition."

Just remember, if you still haven't switched to Windows 11 your PC could be put at risk later next year. Once Microsoft's deadline passes, Windows 10 machines won't get vital updates and patches to help keep them safe.

The tech giant has confirmed it will offer extended support but this will cost money. The price for this service is $61 per year (£48) although it's worth noting that Microsoft is currently only confirming this for business enterprises and not home users.

"While we strongly recommend moving to Windows 11, we understand there are circumstances that could prevent you from replacing Windows 10 devices before the EOS date. Therefore, Microsoft will offer Extended Security Updates," Microsoft's Jason Leznek confirmed last December.
