'Top three dog breeds' to own if you want a clean home

A dog trainer has revealed which breeds are best for keeping your home spick and span.

Dogs can be a bit of a nightmare when it comes to keeping the house clean, what with all the muck they bring in from outdoors and their hair getting everywhere. As a dog owner, you're signing up for a life of lint rollers and hoovering up.

Shedding is just part of the deal when you've got a pooch, but some breeds are less of a headache than others in the hair department.

Dog trainer and founder of American Standard Dog Training, Garret Wing, has shared his top three picks for dogs that won't leave your home looking like a hairy mess.

The social media sensation, boasting over two million YouTube followers, recently hopped onto TikTok to share: "Top three dog breeds that do not shed a lot that we recommend for you and your family."

Labradoodle

Pet nutrition experts at Purina have identified labradoodles as one of the jolliest dog breeds out there. Yet, the breed has stirred some controversy after the man responsible for creating it confessed it was his "life's regret". He likened his work to creating a "Frankenstein monster" and criticised unscrupulous breeding practices.

Addressing the mixed opinions on this breed, Garret shared on his platform: "Now, before you all send me hate mail and tell me how the labradoodle is a science experiment gone wrong, and they only come from backyard breeders and they're completely inbred, just going to let you know that all the labradoodles we've trained in our programme have all been wonderful and amazing."

He concluded: "We highly recommend them for most families."

Xoloitzcuintle - Mexican hairless dog

Garret explained: "It literally has no hair so it can't shed, but you do actually have to rub it with some SPF 50 otherwise it's going to get sunburn. They're pretty cool dogs, I never got to train one, looking forward to it."

These dogs are a much rarer bread - so if you get one you are bound to impress at your local park. They are known to be loyal and loving, and live generally between 12 and 15 years.

However, a spokesperson for Pets4Homes warned that the breed can be expensive. They said: "The Mexican Hairless has fast become a popular breed both in the UK and elsewhere in the world which means that healthy well-bred puppies can often command a lot of money."

Miniature schnauzer

Garret said: "That is a lot of dog packed down into a bite-sized package, that is an amazing little guard dog. It's a great little family companion you can have a lot of fun with." He added that this bread is easy to travel with.

Miniature schnauzers have a loud personality and tend to live for between 12 and 14 years. According to the American Kennel Club, the miniature schnauzer was in the top 20 most popular dogs in 2023.
