How to whiten and soften stained towels fast without vinegar or baking soda

Households everywhere know all too well the challenge of keeping white laundry looking pristine and stain-free, especially towels as those sneaky grey tinges are a universal bane.

One fan of cleaning sensation, Mrs Hinch, poured out their woes on social media and sought guidance on this issue.

Daniel Richards reached out to fellow Facebook users, asking: “How do you get white towels that have discoloured, back to brilliant white?

“I have tried so many whitening laundry products and nothing seems to be working.”

The annoyance of towels turning yellow, dingy, and plagued by stains is common and, frankly, an eyesore.

But there’s good news from other group members who say reviving white towels isn't as hard as it seems if you’re armed with the right product - it can even soften them.

A hot tip among the responders was the miraculous effects of soda crystals in restoring the sparkle to “dull” white towels, even claiming it can make them “softer”.

Maggie Howman offered some advice: “Try adding soda crystals in the machine with your normal detergent. Mine came up so much brighter when I did this and the towels were very discoloured.”

Caitlin Lewis shared her method: “Always wash with soda crystals on every wash and all my whites are white. It's fantastic as it whitens them and makes them soft.”

Gemma Stewart suggested a solution: “Try washing in soda crystals and detergent. My towels are brilliant white now and it helps to clean the washing machine.”

Samantha Ashton explained her approach: “I add half a cup of soda crystals to the washing machine to whiten my towels, then just add in my detergent too. Comes up great.”

As it’s recommended to use half a cup of soda crystals (equivalent to around 100g), it would set you back just 30p per use if you purchased the 500g container of Elbow Grease Soda Crystals from The Range for £1.49.

Soda crystals can also be picked up at local supermarkets like Asda and Ocado for £2.

Soda crystals are natural laundry and cleaning products that dissolve in water. They're free from bleach, don't contain any harmful chemicals and have been used for their cleaning prowess for years.

Not only do they have whitening properties, but soda crystals also have the ability to transform your old, tough towels back into soft and fluffy ones.

If the towels are extremely stiff and hard, fill a bucket with warm water and add some soda crystals. Let the crystals and towels soak for about 15 minutes, then take the towels out and pop them in the washing machine for a normal wash.
