Look beyond Olympic medals to help mothers get back to sport | Women

Reflecting on Team GB’s results at the Paris Olympics, and Laura Kenny’s column (Team GB are reaping the rewards of a transformed attitude to Olympic mums, 7 August), a lot has been made of the number of mothers who won medals. This shows an amazing step change in sporting bodies’ understanding of maternal health.

I hope that these Olympians have had the most amazing support to return to competing. What we have to be careful of is what we expect in the whole population. With inadequate NHS postnatal physio funding, and waiting lists of over a year, many women struggle to return to sport, especially running.

My hope is that the sport science which supports these elite athletes trickles down to help everyone. We should not use this medal tally to ignore the need to fund the services that ordinary women require.
