Best method to store cucumbers so they stay fresh for up to 19 days - 'works perfectly'Do you store cucumbers on the kitchen counter, inside of the fridge – and if so, which shelf? – or do you freeze them? Cucumbers are a popular vegetable to have in the home because of its versatility; it's the perfect addition to salads, smoothies, and sandwiches. Keen to investigate the best method for storing cucumbers, Ann Taylor Pittman from The Kitchn tested out numerous storing methods. These included storing a cucumber, unwrapped in the fridge door and, bizarrely, in a plastic bag with a spoon inside of the fridge. However, one storage method – of the nine tried – came out on the top, making the cucumber stay fresh for up to 19 days. The cucumber storage method involved a paper towel and a zip lock bag, which had been given a rating of 10 out of 10. Pittman penned: "The method has you wrap each cucumber individually in a paper towel, place them together in a zip-top [zip lock] bag, seal the bag, and store in the fridge." She chose the upper shelf in the fridge to store the cucumber, detailing the process. "On day eight, there was noticeable condensation on the inside walls of the bag, which worried me," she noted. "The paper towels were moist, but the cucumbers were in pristine shape." For the most robust cucumbers, Pittman observed that English and Persian cucumbers lasted longer when stored in this way when compared to the traditional thick-skinned cucumber and a pickling cucumber. "On day 15, the conventional and pickling cucumber had developed soft spots on their ends, but the English and Persian cucumbers were still perfect," she wrote. "On the 16th day, the conventional and pickling cucumber were too far gone – withered, with soft spots, and a little slimy." The English and Persian cucumbers, however, stayed fresh for another three days, meaning when stored correctly, they can last for as long as 19 days. Source link Posted: 2024-08-13 02:49:03 |
