Noah Lyles left red-faced after USA's 4x100m disqualification as Michael Johnson fumes | Other | SportNoah Lyles may be regretting his choice of words prior to the Olympics following the United States' disqualification in the men's 4x100 metre relay final. Lyles was not involved in Friday's race after testing positive for Covid-19 earlier this week, with Canada claiming the spoils against the odds. The USA made a real mess of their first baton exchange, leaving them with a mountain to climb to get themselves back into medal contention. They crossed the finish line in seventh place but were later disqualified when it emerged their bungled exchange took place outside the legal zone. Canada's surprise victory left Lyles red-faced following the rediscovery of comments he made at the World Athletics Relays earlier this year. Asked if he saw Canada as a credible threat ahead of the Olympics, Lyles issued a cheeky response as he simply answered: "Who? Who?" Lyles found out exactly who Canada were on Friday night, with Andre de Grasse storming down the home straight to claim victory ahead of South Africa and Team GB. The USA, meanwhile, were left to lick their wounds and consider what went wrong after falling victim to a botched exchange. Michael Johnson did not mince his words on the BBC as he ran the rule over the USA's dreadful display, saying: "It's probably time for us to stop having any expectations of the men's US team, seriously. When you haven't actually done it for so long, we know they aren't going to get it done." BBC presenter Gabby Logan went on to remind Johnson that Carl Lewis had also said it was time to do something about the USA's poor form in the men's relay. He responded: "He said this three years ago. In 2021, Carl was saying it, everybody was saying it, and they are not doing anything about it. It's endemic, it's in the system now. It's ridiculous, it really is, but we should probably stop having expectations." The USA have not won an Olympic medal in the men's 4x100m relay since 2000, mainly due to a series of poor baton exchanges. They finished second in 2012 but were later disqualified and forced to return their medals as Tyson Gay was handed a one-year doping suspension. Source link Posted: 2024-08-10 12:59:28 |
