Mould thrives in warm and humid conditions, and bathrooms are naturally damp due to their function.

While it might seem logical to assume that the waterproof properties of silicone sealant would prevent mould growth, over time, the sealant can detach from the surface, allowing water to accumulate behind it.

Instead, they recommend two of the “best natural cleaners” to help households eliminate mould from bathroom sealants.

1. Baking soda

Baking soda is a highly effective mould remover when mixed with a little water to form a thick paste.

Apply this to the mouldy area, let it sit, then scrub with an old toothbrush and rinse off.

Bicarbonate of soda is mildly abrasive which is great for removing dirt and stains without causing damage, and it also works as a deodoriser to get rid of smells.

2. White vinegar

White vinegar, a versatile cleaning agent, is also a "fantastic mould remover". Plumbing experts at PlumbNation think the same claiming it to be a “brilliant mould deterrent” as well. 

They explained: “Its acidity makes it impossible for mould to grow, and vinegar can clean up to 82 percent of mould species.”

A 568ml bottle of white vinegar retails for just 35p at Sainsbury’s or can be bought in bulk as a 5L bottle on Amazon for £5.99 currently down from £6.99.

For a homemade mould-fighting solution, spray vinegar onto the mouldy spots and wipe them with warm water after an hour. Make sure to dry the area completely to halt any mould from returning.

Keep a bottle of vinegar in the loo for regular spritzes on mould-prone areas it’s said that vinegar is so effective that “mould will never grow” where it's applied.

If you're dealing with persistent mould, try creating a thick paste with vinegar and enough bicarbonate of soda. Let this sit overnight and repeat the wipe-down process.

To keep silicone sealants mould-free, always wipe your bath or shower surfaces down to a dry finish; this removes the damp atmosphere mould loves so much.

And don't forget about proper ventilation in bathrooms a crack of a window or the whirl of an extractor fan can work wonders against mould.
