Manipulative taxi driver, 64, who asked boy, 15, to 'sell his body' dodges jail | UK | News

A former taxi driver from Essex has narrowly escaped imprisonment after admitting to engaging a child in sexual activity. Christopher Hilling, 64, hailing from Burnham-on-Crouch, faced justice at Chelmsford Crown Court yesterday, marking the end of a two-year probe by Essex Police.

Launched in December 2022 by the Chelmsford Criminal Investigation Department, the investigation began following reports of Hilling offering rides to a 15-year-old boy. It was discovered that between September and November 2022, Hilling had arranged to transport the boy in both his taxi and personal vehicle.

Essex Police released a statement confirming: "During one car journey, Hilling asked the victim whether he would be willing to sell his body. The victim decided to stop using Hilling as a taxi driver, however Hilling continued to contact the victim on Whatsapp asking for sexual activity.

"When the victim declined Hillings advances, Hilling offered him money. Hilling was arrested and during interview, denied attempting to groom the victim. He was charged with inciting a boy aged 13-15 to engage in sexual activity."

"After initially pleading not guilty, in June 2024 a guilty plea was accepted for engaging a child into sexual activity."

"Christopher Hilling, 64, faced Chelmsford Crown court today where he was handed a 16 month sentence, suspended for two years. He was also issued with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10 years, a restraining order for 5 years and ordered to pay back £500 in costs."

Detective Constable Megan Evans commented: "Hillings attempts to groom this boy were persistent and manipulative. He has identified himself as a dangerous offender and this victim's strength has ensured that he cannot harm anyone else.

"I must commend this victim who has remained patient and strong throughout this investigation. Protecting vulnerable children is a priority and we will always act quickly to ensure that harmful perpetrators are bought before the courts."
