Drivers in England urged not to park on driveway until Saturday

Drivers up and down the country are being warned to avoid parking on their driveways until at least Saturday, unless it happens to be covered or shaded.

The UK is still in the grip of a heatwave which has baked England in particular, and left drivers battling to keep their car temperatures down while they sit in traffic, baking under their windscreen.

Temperatures peaked at 32C in England on Tuesday according to the Met Office, and although Scotland and Wales have also been warm, England has borne the brunt of the hottest temperatures, especially in London and the South West.

And urgent advice from breakdown experts says drivers should avoid parking on their driveway or on the road outside their house in a bid to try to keep their car cool.

Parking in the shade is an ‘easy’ way to keep your car cool and if you have one, a garage is actually the best place to park in a heatwave.

That’s because the shade of the inside of your garage will keep your car cool, meaning it’s not hot to the touch as soon as you get in.

Accroding to the Met Office's latest forecasts, temperatures won't drop until at least Saturday, when highs of 32C seen this week will drop to a much more manageable 24C, which means it's best to avoid parking out in the open until then.

It will also save you fuel because you don’t need to max the aircon as soon as you get inside the car, as it will start off from a much cooler temperature inside when you set off.

Breakdown experts at the RAC said: “Parking in the shade – perhaps under a tree or canopy – is one easy way to prevent your car heating up.

“If you have a garage, then use it. It will keep your car cool, clean and secure.”

Other advice on keeping your car cool includes closing the top vents inside your car while the aircon cools down, and then shutting windows and reopening the vents once your car has cooled.
