Appliance experts have shared a quick and easy method to banish unpleasant smells from washing machines.

Keeping washing machines fresh, clean and well-maintained is essential as it will not only keep the appliance looking and smelling its best but it's more likely to last longer too.

One common problem homeowners often experience is unpleasant smells. Mould and mildew, bacteria, debris, too much detergent, clogged filters and poor drainage can all contribute to unpleasant washing machine smells.

With this in mind, Salah Sun, the head of product marketing at Beko Plc UK & Ireland, has shared the best method for banishing unpleasant washing machine smells.

Salah said: “When it comes to getting the freshest laundry, you need to take care of your washing machine with some TLC – tumble-loving care.

"Whether it is cleaning the right way or making sure you know the right cycle for your laundry, understanding your appliance better can make laundry easier.”

Regular maintenance is essential for a fresh, clean-smelling washing machine. If you don't maintain your machine, those unpleasant, musty smells could linger on your clothes - even after they've been washed.

As well as wiping down the outside of your washing machine, you should clean the inside. Over time, detergent, dirt and hair can build under the door seal

Salah says: “Most washing machines have pre-programmed clean cycles that you can utilise for refreshing your machine.

"These are hot cycles that you do with an empty drum to help clean your drum. Add a cap of vinegar to the drawer, and even some baking soda to the drum, for a deep clean which removes limescale and built-up grime.

“Ideally, you’ll want to run the clean cycle once a month, as well as wiping down your door seal, door, and cleaning out your detergent drawer to avoid build-up. Your filter can be cleaned every couple of months.”
