Expert's tips to revive blooms and ensure yearly flowersOrchids, often seen as the zenith of indoor gardening elegance, can intimidate even seasoned gardeners. However, with the right care, these captivating plants can reward their owners with stunning blooms year after year. Gardening enthusiast Frank Ferragine, known for his channel Frankie Flowers on YouTube, offers valuable advice on how to rejuvenate orchids once their petals begin to wilt. When an orchid finishes blooming, the plant requires specific interventions to stimulate new growth. Ferragine suggests two main methods to encourage reblooming. The first involves removing the flower spike entirely by cutting it down to the base. Alternatively, gardeners can prune the spike just above a node - small bumps on the side of the plant - to trigger fresh growth and future blooms. However, patience is key, as this process can take a few months. Ferragine emphasises that orchids need to be treated with care to promote reblooming, explaining: "Most people overwater, over-fertilise, and provide excessive care." To correct this, he advises reducing water and fertiliser and allowing the plant to experience cooler temperatures at night. This balance helps stimulate the orchid’s natural blooming cycle. Orchids, part of a vast family of over 2,500 species, can be expected to rebloom every eight to 12 months with proper care. Varieties such as Cattleya, Cymbidium, Dendrobium, and Paphiopedilum are especially suitable for novice orchid enthusiasts. The Royal Horticultural Society adds that placing orchids in an environment where nighttime temperatures are cooler than daytime can significantly aid in coaxing them to flower. "With the right approach, orchids will not only survive but thrive, giving you beautiful blooms that last throughout the year," Ferragine added. Source link Posted: 2024-07-31 09:12:07 |
