Whether it's popping open a bottle of Champagne, Prosecco, or another sparkling wine, we all love to celebrate with a bit of bubbly.

But beware, opening a bottle can be a tricky and potentially hazardous affair if not done correctly. Fear not, as a wine expert has come to the rescue with a foolproof method for safely uncorking your fizz.

In an enlightening TikTok video, wine aficionado Tom Gilbey demonstrated to his 145,000 followers the essential steps to properly open a bottle of sparkling wine, highlighting three key rules to follow.

"Off with the foil, nice and clean, and chuck it there. And then we've got this cage on the top - the cage is to keep this cork in because once the cage is off, it's bleeding dangerous," Tom began his tutorial.

"So we'll take the cage off, we unscrew the key like this - pointing it away from anyone." Tom then emphasised the three crucial points: "Protect the cork and hold it with your hand. [Hold the] bottle at 45 degrees. And you turn the bottle - not the cork."

Tom added: "And it should go a little bit like this," before expertly opening his bottle. He joked at the end of the video, before taking a big swig: "And then generally, it's good to put it in a glass - but if you've had a long day like this, for me, I just go straight out of the bottle."

TikTok users were clearly grateful for the tip, with the video amassing thousands of views and comments. One user commented: "I point the cork into the garden and make the cork fly as far as I can and my children woop it up."

Another remarked: "I've always wiggled the cage off! Who knew I was dicing with death - might have to commit to practising this method."
