The former chief executive of Prince Harry's Invictus Games Foundation has spoken out for the first time since quitting the job after nearly a decade at the helm of the organization.

Dominic Reid helped the Duke of Sussex set up the first edition of the Invictus Games in 2014 and remained in charge of the charity for nearly a decade.

His resignation came mere days after Harry received the Pat Tillman Award for Service despite opposition from the late veteran's mother.

In a heartfelt message following his departure, Mr Reid praised the work of the Invictus Games for the support shown to veterans since its creation.

He insisted serving in the role had been "an honour" but was now "the right time" to step down.

Speaking to Forces News, Mr Reid said: "It's without question the community that has been built.

"It's a fantastic closed community and it's growing 40% a year, which is phenomenal, internationally it's grown to include friends and families and that's a vitally important part as well.

"The community is what we have achieved. It has had a healing effect."

He called the organisation a "great place" but insisted it now needed a "fresh look" for the next phase of the Invictus Games.

Mr Reid added: "I think now it requires energy and a fresh look to engage it and take it to the next level. I think it's a good time for all of us."

Following the announcement, Prince Harry praised Mr Reid for his work and dedication to the project.

In a heartfelt message, the Duke said: "Ten years on from the inception of the Invictus Games, we proudly stand as a community of 23 nations spanning every continent, fulfilling our mission of saving and changing lives.

"I am immensely grateful to my friend, Dominic, whose dedication and leadership transformed the Invictus Games from an ambitious idea to an internationally recognised movement.

"His tireless efforts over the past decade have supported thousands of wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans through sports rehabilitation, helping to showcase their unparalleled strength and contribution to society. "
