New data reveals which political party the British public blame for the ongoing migrant hotel crisis in the UK. The data comes on the same day that the Home Office released its quarterly migrant figures, showing a shocking 8% increase in the number of migrants staying in hotels compared to the same period last year.
New YouGov polling commissioned today (Thursday 21) asked 5,292 British voters which government they hold most responsible for the current issues around asylum seekers being housed in hotels. The largest proportion of respondents voted for both the current Labour government and the previous Conservative government combined, gaining 40% of the vote share. In second place, 28% of those surveyed voted for the previous Conservative government.
Labour came closely behind in third place with 19% of the vote share, as 11% of people ticked the “don’t know” box, and 3% said “neither”.
This comes as the Home Office data shows that the number of asylum seekers staying in hotels is up 8% to 32,059 during Sir Keir Starmer's first year in power following a surge in Channel crossings.
The data also shows the number of people claiming asylum in the UK reached a record 111,084 in the year to June 2025. And small boat deportations are down by 7% to 2,330 in the 12-month period which will prompt renewed fears over the lack of a deterrent to people hoping to make the Channel crossing.
Just 1,174 small boat migrants have been deported so far this year, compared to 2,377 in 2024, according to the data.
Political opponent Nigel Farage has hit out at both parties for the soaring figures, writing on X: “Under Labour we now have record numbers claiming asylum.
"The vast majority should never qualify and most will cost the taxpayer a huge sum of money.
"Our streets are becoming more dangerous yet this disaster gets worse.
"The public are right to be very angry with both Labour and the Tories for what they have done to us.”
