With the last of Summer Bank Holiday’s fast approaching, many Brits will be hoping for sunny conditions to enjoy their extra day off. However, the remnants of Hurricane Erin may have an influence on UK weather conditions this weekend, potentially bringing in unsettled patterns. Leading up to the Bank Holiday this week, high pressure has dominated across Britain, despite the temperatures being slightly lower than soaring 30C heatwave figures we have been enjoying.

According to the Met Office, this is due to the high pressure being located to the north-west of Scotland, resulting in cooler conditions. “As the week progresses, a cold front will move southwards, allowing high pressure to build more widely from the north,” the weather forecaster predicts. “This will lead to a gradual clearance of clouds and the arrival of sunnier skies, particularly across northern and eastern parts of the UK on Wednesday.”

As we edge closer to the weekend, Thursday is expected to see cooler temperatures in the north, and familiar low 20s in the southern regions of the UK. However, on Friday, Brits can prepare for sunnier weather and temperatures closer to 23C or 24C.

The Met Office says: “As we head into the Bank Holiday weekend, high pressure will continue to dominate, bringing settled and fine weather for Saturday and likely into Sunday.

“However, weak areas of low pressure in the Atlantic may begin to encroach on western parts of the UK later in the weekend, potentially bringing showers.”

Hurricane Erin has the potential to unsettle weather patterns towards the latter part of the weekend, the forecaster warns.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Stephen Kocher explains: “A key feature to watch in the coming days is Hurricane Erin, which is currently a category three storm to the east of the Bahamas.

“We are closely watching Erin’s track, with the possibility of the UK feeling the effects of what would then be ex-hurricane Erin at some point next week, bringing an area of low pressure to the UK and more unsettled conditions.

“This is still a week away however, so there is lots of uncertainty in the forecast, but it is possible we could see some wet and windy weather for the last week of August.

“We’ll be keeping a close eye on the movements of Hurricane Erin over the coming days and updating our forecasts accordingly.”
