A used car expert has suggested three astonishing cars a person could buy for the price of a brand new Range Rover. In recent years, as the cost of living crisis has bitten harder and wages have not aligned, more people have taken to the used car market for their next automotive purchase.

The reason for this is because, in a lot of cases, used cars are cheaper than their brand new counterparts. This means, with a bit of searching, people can pick-up of bargain. But, what if you didn’t have £10,000 to spare on a car, but £100,000?

This was the question asked by Auto Express expert Ellis Hyde who tried to find a three-car garage for the price of a new Range Rover, which sits at around £100,000 at the time of writing (2025).

The first car Ellis chose was a Bentley Continental GT, a premium super coupe built by Bentley. When new, these cars cost well into six figures, but Ellis found one for just £44,995.

On why he had chosen the model, he said it offers potential buyers “style, stupendous speed and a pillowy ride, which makes it the perfect car for crossing counties, countries or even entire continents if you’re lucky enough to have the time”.

He added: “This particular example we found in our classified had covered just over 26,000 miles, yet the gorgeous interior appears factory fresh.”

The second car Ellis chose was at the other end of the coupe spectrum. Whilst the Bentley was designed to cross continents, the Lotus Exige V6 S is designed to conquer apexes and tight corners. The model chosen was on for sale at just £39,995.

On why he had decided on this model, Ellis explained: “While the big Bentley offers everything you might want from a car in terms of creature comforts, the Lotus Exige strips it all back to deliver the most thrilling driving experience it can.

“If you think modern cars are too complicated and fussy, this Exige V6 S has a good old-fashioned six-speed manual gearbox, unassisted steering and barely any amenities to distract you from the road ahead.”

Alongside picking a Lotus and Bentley, Ellis decided to go for a British top three with his third choice, a used Range Rover Sport on sale for just £18,995.

He said: “The car we’ve found might not be the full fat, flagship Range Rover, but the Range Rover Sport is still an incredibly impressive luxury SUV that’s comfortable yet dynamic, and extremely capable off road.”

Whilst Ellis opted for a used SUV for his third choice, another expert, this time car mechanic James Goodhand, told the Express he would opt for a used estate over a used SUV.

He said: “Largely personal prejudice here, but I always advise buying an estate car rather than the equivalent SUV. Who needs the extra height?

“Take Volvo’s big car offering for example - you can buy an XC90 SUV or a V90 estate. The V90 is a good 25% cheaper used, it’s got more room inside, its faster, handles better, uses less fuel, and you're far more likely to be let out of side turnings in one!”
