Vladimir Putin agreed to allow the US and Europe to provide Ukraine with NATO-like security guarantees, it has been claimed. Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, provided further details about the high-profile meeting that took place in Alaska on Friday between the Russian and US presidents.

He told CNN: "We got to an agreement that the United States and other European nations could effectively offer Article 5-like language to cover a security guarantee." Article 5 is a cardinal principle of NATO, and states that an attack on one member country could be considered an attack on all members - potentially dragging the whole Western military alliance into a war.

Putin has strongly opposed to Ukraine joining NATO, and has cited Kyiv becoming closer to the Western military alliance in recent years as one of the reasons Russia illegally invaded the nation.

While Kyiv maintains only being a member of NATO could prevent another attack launched by the Kremlin in the future, the White House appeared satisfied with the reported concession by Putin. Mr Witkoff said the arrangement could be an alternative to a full membership, if "the Ukrainians could like with that".

This major update comes after Mr Trump hailed "big progress" with Moscow in a brief message released on Truth Social. Without providing details, he wrote: "BIG PROGRESS ON RUSSIA. STAY TUNED! President DJT.”

Mr Witkoff's update comes hours before Volodymyr Zelensky will travel to Washington to meet Mr Trump - accompanied by Sir Keir Starmer and other European leader.

Amid fears the US is ready to give Russia Ukrainian land, such as the Donbas, to strike a peace deal, Mr Starmer and Emmanuel Macron praised on Sunday Mr Zelensky’s desire for a “just and lasting peace”.

Giving a readout of the 'coalition of the willing' call, a No 10 spokesman said: “President Macron and Prime Minister Starmer today co-chaired a virtual meeting of a grouping of ‘coalition of the willing’ leaders with the participation of President Zelensky.

“Leaders convened to discuss support for Ukraine and next steps in peace negotiations following President Trump’s meeting with President Putin in Alaska.

“The leaders reaffirmed their continued support to Ukraine, and praised President Zelensky’s desire for a just and lasting peace as he prepares for further consultations with President Trump in Washington DC.

“The leaders also commended President Trump’s commitment to providing security guarantees to Ukraine, in which the coalition of the willing will play a vital role through the Multinational Force Ukraine, among other measures.

“They re-emphasised the readiness to deploy a reassurance force once hostilities have ceased, and to help secure Ukraine’s skies and seas and regenerate Ukraine’s armed forces.

“The President and Prime Minister also informed leaders that they would travel to Washington DC tomorrow for a meeting with President Trump, alongside President Zelensky.”
