There is nothing worse than an unpleasant-tasting cup of tea or coffee. These hot beverages can taste bitter or even dull for a number of reasons. Mineral-heavy tap water, poor-quality tea bags or coffee beans, and limescale-laden kettles can all impact the taste of your hot beverages. Tap water often contains chlorine and chloramine to disinfect and kill bacteria in the water. While these chemicals are used to make tap water safe and drinkable, they can make water taste unpleasant.

Other minerals in tap water include calcium and magnesium, which can make water taste bitter or even slightly metallic. One way you can make your tea and coffee taste better is to remove limescale from your kettle, but if you've tried that already and you're looking for an alternative method, you could try filtering your water first.

Alexander Provins, a general manager and expert in the filtration industry at Tappwater, a water filter company, has shared why using filtered water is "better for your brew".

Mr Provins exclusively told Express.co.uk: "Filtered water isn’t just better for you, it’s better for your brew. Chlorine and limescale in tap water can dull the delicate flavours of tea and coffee. By removing these impurities, filtered water allows the true taste of your beans and leaves to shine through.

"It’s why professional baristas and tea sommeliers always start with clean water; it’s the secret ingredient that doesn’t appear on the label.

"A good cup of tea is 99% water. Why compromise on the main ingredient?”

However, it's not just about removing what you don't want from your tap water, it's about keeping what you do want.

According to the expert, many teas and coffees are formulated to taste better with the natural minerals found in tap water.

Certain systems can overfilter water, stripping out these minerals completely, making hot beverages taste dull and flat.

Certain filters will preserve essential minerals while still removing limescale, chlorine and other contaminants.

Mr Proving said the end result is "purified water that retains the natural goodness your coffee and tea need, delivering a cleaner, more vibrant flavour in every cup".

There are a variety of filters available, including filters that attach directly to your tap, filter jugs, and kettles with filters.
