Citroen has expanded its safety recall to almost 10,000 cars, and motorists are told to park their cars immediately. The French manufacturer has extended its “stop-drive” recall due to a serious airbag safety problem.

The latest recall means five different Citroen and DS models are affected. Citroen DS3s built between 2009 and 2016 are affected in the latest action, as well as DS Automobiles DS3s built from 2016 to 2019. Citroen C4 cars built from 2010 to 2018, Citroen DS4 built between 2010 and 2017 and Citroen DS5’s built from 2010 to 2018 are also impacted.

The issue is related to Citroen’s ongoing Takata airbag troubles  and there are concerns the tool could explode. Motorists have reportedly started to receive stop-drive notices by post earlier this week. It comes just weeks after 96,000 UK drivers were told to park up and stop using their C3 and DS3 cars for fears of an issue.

A Citroen spokesperson told the Press Association: “To date, more than 66,000 vehicles have had their new replacement airbags fitted.

“We forecast that the majority of customer vehicles will have their new replacement airbags fitted by the end of September, with the remaining cases handled as swiftly as possible within the coming weeks.”

The French manufacturer added: “In addition, Stellantis has proactively decided to expand the stop-drive to include additional Citroen C4 (2010-2011), DS4 (2010-2011), and DS5 (2010-2013) vehicles. In the UK, this amounts to an additional 9,968 vehicles.”

The latest action means that to date, a total of 106,000 Citroen’s have been impacted. It is understood that Citroen proactively decided to expand the stop-drive action and was not forced into the move by the DVSA.

Affected vehicles will only cause a problem in the event of an airbag deployment but road users need to get the issue solved immediately. Any recall repair work will usually be covered completely free of charge meaning road users won't have to pay-out for any upgrades.

Citroen should be getting in touch with every owner but road users can check whether their car is affected by the current recall notice in just minutes by searching online.

Road users only need to search their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the Citroen UK website. Motorists can also check recall notices through an online Government tool if they search for their registration plate.
