The UK is basking in hot weather once again with temperatures set to exceed 30C across the nation. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Met Office have issued an amber heat-health alert for the West Midlands, East Midlands, South East, London and East of England until 6pm this evening (Wednesday, August 13).
While many homeowners will be keeping a close eye on the health of their lawn, experts are also urging them to be mindful of their outdoor surfaces. Both patios and driveways face an increased risk of damage during periods of hot weater, with repairs potentially costing up to Β£1,000.
The warm weather can cause surfaces to crack, crumble or lose colour. Bill Jarvis, a driveway sealing expert at Premium Paints, has suggested that damage can often be worse than it initially looks.
He explained: "What many people donβt realise is that heat damage to patios and driveways tends to show up later. By the time you spot the cracks, the surface has already taken a beating."
Materials such as tarmac, resin and concrete can expand if exposed to sun for too long. They can then dry out and eventually crack if they haven't been maintained correctly.
Experts advise homeowners to check their patios and driveways for damage during the hot summer months. If left unrepaired, the damage could cost up to Β£1,000 this winter.
Mr Jarvis recommends using high-quality sealants on your outdoor surfaces. They help to lock in moisture, prevent cracking and protect the colour of slabs.
For those re-doing their patio this summer, the expert also advises to use paler tones or materials such as porcelain. They stay cooler for longer as they absorb less heat.
While hot weather causes surfaces to crack, the inevitable heavy rain after a heatwave can cause a water buildup. To prevent this from happening, Mr Jarvis recommends homeowners to think about the drainage systems they have in place.
