There is nothing like switching on a good film when you have some free time.

While many love thrillers or love stories, often it is fun to change it up.

Lately people have been obsessing over western series like Yellowstone, as well as 1923 starring Helen Mirren, and Ransom Canyon was in the top 10 for four weeks earlier this year.

Plus there is an abundance of western films on Netflix that you may not know about which offer plenty of action.

Popular film recommendation page, The House of Movies on TikTok, which rakes in millions of views for it's videos has shared six movies which should be on your western film list.

1. Sweet Girl

The dramatic film, with plenty of action and adventure, stars Jason Mamo and Isabela Merced. The synopsis on Netflix reads: "He taught his daughter the best way to win an unfair fight is to fight harder. To get justice for all they've lost, these two must fight together."

The film is just short of two hours long and was released in 2021. On Google reviews it has a 3.7 rating out of 5. People have found it "exhilarating and deeply moving", as well as boasting a "remarkable plot".

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

This 2018 film which is 2 hours and 13 minutes long earned three Oscar nominations and won Best Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival. Created by the Coen brothers, the film has a 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes boasts a star-studded cast, including Liam Neeson, James, Franco, and Tim Blake Nelson.

The film highlights 19-century post-Civil War America during the settling of the Old West. It reveals the tales of six different people - from a singing gunslinger, bank robber, traveling impresario, an elderly prospector, a perverse pair of bounty hunters, and a wagon train.

The Power of the Dog

This psychological drama film, released in 2021, is set in 1925. Netflix describes the film and says: "Amid the wild beauty of the West, a rancher driven to dominate beast and brethren brutally undermines his brother's new bride and her teen soon."

For those who love ominous, cerebral and understated themes, this film could be well suited to you. It was directed by Jane Campion and is based on Thomas Savage 1967 novel. It has a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Concrete Cowboy

Created in 2020, this American drama film based on the novel Ghetto Cowboy has received an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It stars Luther actor Idris Elba as well as Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin.

Netflix states: "Sent to live with his estranged father for the summer, a rebellious teen finds kinship in a tight-knit Philadelphia community of Black cowboys."

Google reviews say the film is a "great eye opener", as well as being "touching and powerful".

The Ridiculous 6

This Netflix film is about Tommy 'White Knife' Stockburn who sets off across the West on a rescue mission with his five brothers he never knew he had, following his outlaw dad's kidnapping.

Adam Sandler plays Tommy. Terry Crews, Rob Schneider, Luke Wilson, Jorge Garcia and Taylor Launtner also star in the film. For those who want a mixture of western themes as well as comedy and satire, this 2015 film is for you.

One individual stated on Google reviews that it is "absolutely rib cracking hilarious", while another said "the absurbidy of it all is definately a highlight".

The Killer

This 2017 film, directed by David Fincher, is 18 rated and is just over 90 minutes long. The synopsis of this Brazilian western reads: "In lawles badlands, reclusive Cabeleira sets out to discover the fate of his gunman father and grows to be a feared assassin himself."

It has received a 6/10 rating on IMDb. Google reviewers state it is a "beautiful film" and a "masterpiece".
