Every type of hair requires washing, but achieving the best appearance for different styles demands tailored care. Whether your locks are curly, straight, short, fine, or thick, there's a regimen to nurture every hair variety, with washing frequency being central to each approach.
However, establishing that particular formula can prove challenging without expert guidance. Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Cheryl Marks, a three-time Emmy-nominated Hollywood hairstylist, revealed: "How often you should wash your hair is a commonly asked question, and it depends on your hair type and texture. Is your scalp oily, do you work out often? This all depends on each person individually, and there is not a one-size-fits-all answer."
She added, "I usually recommend washing your hair every other day so there are some natural oils that will build up, which is great for a healthy scalp."
Nevertheless, it's crucial to acknowledge how additional elements influence the impact washing has on your tresses. Age represents one of the primary factors, which Cheryl explained significantly affects texture above all else.
She noted, "As we get older, our hair texture changes. It can become drier, so washing your hair every day is not advised. Let some of your natural oils build up."
As a general rule of thumb, people with straight hair should wash their hair every two to three days
Those with curly, coarse, or coily hair—which tends to be drier and more porous—can shampoo every four to seven days.
Something that proves universally beneficial across all hair varieties, though, is quality shampoo and conditioner.
Cheryl recommended HASK's Argan Oil Repairing Shampoo and Conditioner, which she described as perfect for daily cleansing. The formula is designed to restore hair's appearance while softening, detangling, and simultaneously protecting against damage and breakage.
The Hollywood stylist advised: "Develop a quick and easy regimen that you can follow no matter how much time you have, and use products with good ingredients.
"The health of your hair is always the number one thing to focus on, and it's not something that you need to spend a lot of money on either.
"Products from HASK are budget-friendly but have quality ingredients that will have your hair health at the forefront."
Melanie Palm, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon at Art of Skin MD, explains that it's not just about the products you use.
She said that double shampooing, which involves washing the hair twice over in one shower, is recommended for those with curly and coarse hair who go longer without washing it.
However, people who wash their hair daily or every other day should avoid double shampooing because it can strip the scalp of necessary oils.
Double shampooing could even cause dryness, dandruff, or flaking for people with sensitive scalps.
