Netflix has just dropped fans’ best look at the upcoming murder mystery film The Thursday Murder Club ahead of its debut later this month.

Based on the bestselling book by Richard Osman, the first film adaptation of the smash-hit series is set to be released on Friday, 28th August.

British film legends Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley, Pierce Brosnan and Celia Imrie make up the main cast of a group of retirees who have formed an amateur crime-solving club.

When a very real crime scene rocks their community, the wannabe sleuths leap into action to unearth the truth behind a cryptic killing.

Directed by Harry Potter filmmaker Chris Columbus and written by Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote, The Thursday Murder Club is expected to become one of Netflix’s biggest hits of the year.

The trailer begins with retired spy Elizabeth Best (Mirren) inviting former nurse Joyce Meadowcroft (Imrie) into the club by presenting her with a photo of an old case.

When an actual murder appears to have happened in their village, Elizabeth, Joyce, retired union leader Ron Ritchie (Brosnan) and retired physician Ibrahim Arif (Kingsley) start the investigation.

Along with the main quartet, the trailer gives fans the first full look at the supporting cast, including Naomi Ackie as police officer Donna De Freitas who gets roped into helping the club’s investigation.

Also in the cosy crime thriller’s packed ensemble are several familiar faces from the UK, including David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, Daniel Mays and Richard E Grant.

The trailer concludes with an ominous warning from Elizabeth, who tells an unseen character: “If any harm comes to my friends, I will personally be laying a dozen blood red roses on your coffin.”

Director Columbus told Netflix of working on the film: “This is the finest cast I've worked with since Potter.

“They’re just so incredibly well-prepared, and it’s because they do everything.

“They do theatre, they do television, they do film, and they’ve developed those sorts of muscles.”

Author Osman has already penned five novels in the series, with the fifth entry, The Impossible Fortune, slated for release later this year.

It remains to be seen if Netflix has plans to adapt the rest of the comedy-crime saga.

The Thursday Murder Club premieres Friday, 28th August on Netflix.
