Donald Trump has threatened to make every female athlete take a one-time sex test at the 2028 Olympics. The event is due to be staged in Los Angeles for the first time since 1984.

The Olympics is heading to North America following the Paris Games last year. The event in France proved controversial after Imane Khelif won the women’s welterweight boxing gold medal and Lin Yu-ting triumphed in the women’s featherweight category. During the Games, it became apparent that both boxers had been disqualified from the 2023 Women’s World Championships after allegedly failing gender eligibility tests.

On Tuesday, Trump appeared at a press conference that was held to promote the Los Angeles Olympics, which is due to get underway in July 2028.

The US President was asked a question about the prospect of prosecuting transgender athletes participating in women’s events, referring especially to women’s boxing.

And he replied: “As far as charges, I’d have to ask the attorney general about that. I don’t know, but there will be a very, very strong form of testing, and if the test doesn’t come out appropriately, they won’t be in the Olympics.”

The president and chairman of the US Olympic and Paralympic committee, Gene Sykes, was also present at the press conference on Tuesday.

And Trump was quick to thank him for the group’s vow to follow an order from the Trump administration by banning transgender women athletes from the event.

“The United States will not let men steal trophies from women at the 2028 Olympics. So, we appreciate the fairness and everything else that you’ve shown,” Trump told Sykes.

Trump then asserted that the US Olympic and Paralympic committee may have prohibited transgender athletes from competing in women’s events at the Games without his guidance anyway as he stated: “They probably would have because it just seems to be an issue that most people feel should be."

And the 79-year-old then said that he intended to mobilise “the entire federal government to ensure the Games are safe, seamless and historically successful.”

He added: “It’s going to be amazing. I think it’s going to be amazing. America is a nation of champions, and in July 2028 we’ll show the world what America does best, and that’s when we’re winning like we have never won before.”

Trump won the election last November and began his second stint as US President following his inauguration in January. He is due to remain in his role until the start of 2029, with individuals only able to serve two terms under current legislation.
