Details of Thomas Partey's allegations were read out in Westminster Magistrates' Court as the former Arsenal footballer was granted conditional bail in his first court appearance. The 32-year-old Ghana international had been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

He was charged with five counts of rape against two women, and a charge of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022 when he was playing for Arsenal. Partey was charged four days after leaving the club after his contract expired at the end of June. He denies all charges.

Partey was wearing a black zip-neck jumper and carried a navy blazer as he entered court. He stood with his arms behind his back in the dock, speaking only to confirm details such as his name, date of birth, and address.

The hearing lasted approximately 15 minutes and Partey was granted conditional bail, meaning that he can continue his career as a footballer before turning up to his next court appearance at Old Bailey at 10am on September 2. He is expected to join Spanish club Villarreal on a free transfer this summer and Judge Paul Goldspring said during the hearing that Partey would soon be moving to Spain.

Judge Goldspring told Partey: "You face six charges, five of which are indictable only, which means they must be sent to the crown court. The sixth charge can be sent if it is a related offence. I'm satisfied it is. In this case [you will be sent to] the Central Criminal Court, you might know it as the Old Bailey, on September 2 this year."

Partey thanked the judge when told that he was free to leave the court.

A brief summary of the accusations that were read out by prosecutor Jocelyn Ledward KC follows below:

Charge 1: Anal rape of Complainant 1 between April 2021 and May 2021. Complainant 1 alleges one occasion when engaging in consensual vaginal sexual intercourse and Thomas Partey penetrated her anus with his penis without her consent. Allegation reported to police in February 2022 and Partey arrested and interviewed in July 2022.

Charge 2: Anal rape of Complainant 1 between April 2021 and June 2021. Multi-incident allegation where Complainant 1 alleges Thomas Partey inserted his penis into her anus without her consent on at least four occasions. Partey attended a voluntary interview in November 2024.

Charge 3: Vaginal rape of Complainant 2 in December 2021. Thomas Partey asked Complainant 2 for sex, she said she did not want to, but he allegedly penetrated her vagina with his penis anyway without consent. The allegation was made to police in February 2025 and Partey attended a voluntary interview in March 2025.

Charge 4: Anal rape of Complainant 2 in February 2022. It is alleged Thomas Partey asked Complainant 2 for anal sex, she did not want to, but he put his penis in her anus anyway. This was reported to police in September 2022, but the allegation was not put to Partey during his voluntary interview in March 2025.

Charge 5: Vaginal rape of Complainant 2 in Marbella in June 2022. Complainant 2 alleges Thomas Partey vaginally raped her in Spain. Partey was interviewed about this in July 2022.

Charge 6: Sexual assault of Complainant 3 in February 2022. It is alleged Thomas Partey sexually assaulted Complainant 3 when she attended his address by lying on top of her, trying to kiss her, and touching her all over her body over clothing without consent. She tried to push him off and after a couple of minutes he stopped. He attended a voluntary interview about this in February 2023.

In a statement on July 4, when Partey was charged, his lawyer Jenny Wiltshire said: "Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation.

"He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name. Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further."

An Arsenal spokesman added at the time: "The player's contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case."

The case continues.
