We’re a good way through the summer blockbusters following the releases of Jurassic World: Rebirth, Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. And now August is upon us with a variety of genres hitting cinema screens and streaming services. Here’s the Top 5 films arriving this coming month, from a comedy and a horror to a fantasy drama and a murder mystery.

The Naked Gun (August 1)

Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson resurrected good old-fashioned 90 minute absurdist comedy in this reboot of the Leslie Nielsen films. Critically acclaimed, expect a gag every few minutes that will have you howling in your seat. Check out our review here.

Weapons (August 8)

Currently boasting a perfect 100 per cent Rotten Tomatoes score, this mystery horror follows the case of 17 kids from the same classroom disappearing overnight at the same time. Written and directed by Zach Cregger, the film stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich and Benedict Wong.

Materialists (August 13)

Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal star in this new rom-com. Set in New York, the film follows a love triangle between Johnson’s matchmaker, her aspiring actor ex and a charming millionaire.

The Life of Chuck (August 22)

Based on Stephen King’s novella of the same name, Tom Hiddleston stars opposite Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Mark Hamill, Jacob Tremblay and Nick Offerman in this new fantasy drama. The story follows the life of Chuck Krantz in reverse order from his death at the end of the universe back to his childhood.

The Thursday Murder Club (August 22 in select cinemas and August 28 on Netflix)

Chris Columbus’ screen adaptation of Richard Osman’s best-selling murder mystery about a group of OAP amateur sleuths is coming to Netflix this month. Boasting an all-star ensemble cast from producer Steven Spielberg are the following actors: Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, Naomi Ace, Daniel Mays and Richard E Grant.
