Ruben Amorim has left the door to a Rasmus Hojlund departure wide open this summer, despite the Manchester United striker's goal against Bournemouth. Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring in United's impressive 4-1 win at Soldier Field in Chicago with a glancing header amid the club's efforts to sign Benjamin Sesko.

The Red Devils have reportedly chosen Sesko as their priority striker target over Ollie Watkins as Amorim looks to complete an attacking overhaul. Hojlund's future has subsequently fallen into serious doubt, and there is said to be interest from multiple suitors.

The United No. 9 was among the club's players who endured a dismal 2024/25 season, scoring just four Premier League goals.

But he has shown glimpses of improvement in pre-season so far and reminded Amorim of his goalscoring pedigree against Bournemouth.

After full-time, when quizzed over his striker situation, Amorim stressed that he was satisfied with Hojlund's progression.

However, the Portuguese head coach undoubtedly hinted that United's plans to sign a new striker were in full flow by failing to confirm the Denmark international's status.

"I am really happy with Rasmus. [But] I don't know what is going to happen until the end of the market," Amorim explained.

"Strikers working well and helping the team, that is really important. Ras is improving."

He added to club media: "For me, it is more than a goal. For him, it's more important than a goal. And for the fans, maybe it is more important than a goal.

"We need goals. But the way he is linking the play in this moment, the way he is fighting for the ball...

"Sometimes we are pressed, we can kick the ball [upfield] and he is connecting with the ball. That is so important for us to play better. So he's doing a very good job."

Hojlund's pre-season exploits likely will not derail United's attempts to seal a deal for Sesko, but they could ensure he stays put to compete with the Slovenian.

RB Leipzig are thought to want a guaranteed fee worth £64million plus add-ons and a percentage of a future sale, so negotiations will not be straightforward.

But United are showcasing clear signs of a calibration into Amorim's system, with two friendlies against Everton and Fiorentina remaining.
